Communicating Science: Fundamentals for Public Engagement

This course gives scientists the skills and confidence to engage with public audiences and provides insight for continuing their training. The instructor discusses different styles and key components of communication, the benefits of public engagement, factors to consider with the different potential audiences, tips for honing your message, how to get involved and the tools available to scientists and engineers. Communicating Science also includes real-world examples of scientists discussing their work and how they addressed the challenges of communicating science to various audiences. This course will help you:

Instructor: Jeanne Braha, Project Director of Public Engagement, AAAS

A science communications and public engagement professional, Ms. Braha is responsible for the management of the AAAS Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology. Since 2004, the AAAS Center for Public Engagement has worked to further awareness of science and the scientific process, and increase public input into scientific research and policy agendas, encouraging and facilitating dialogue among policymakers, the general public and the scientific community. Braha’s work encourages scientists to take a more personal and proactive interest in public engagement using evidence-based approaches. She previously worked in civic engagement, science education and science communications at the National Academy of Sciences and other organizations.
